Frequently asked questions:
Can a supervisor place you on PIC without warning or skip to a final PIC when I haven't received a verbal warning?
Yes. If the supervisor concludes that the performance or conduct concerns are too serious to warrant a verbal warning, they may issue a written PIC, final PIC or even terminate.
How long will I be on PIC?
A written PIC will be in effect for three months starting the date the PIC was issued. A final PIC will be in effect for six months starting the date the PIC was issued.
What if I am still in my orientation period and have problems?
If you are paid hourly, your orientation period lasts three months following the date of hire. If you are an exempt employee your orientation period lasts six months following the date of hire. If your job performance or conduct during your orientation period is unsatisfactory supervisors may terminate the staff member without notice or they may extend the orientation period.
Can I transfer to another job if I am on PIC?
Yes. However you must inform the supervisor, of the department that you wish to transfer to, that you are on PIC, which level of PIC and the circumstances of the PIC. Failure to do so will jeopardize the transfer and possibly result in termination.
Can I get my salary increase while on PIC?
No. If it is determined that you are eligible for an increase it will be effective the 1 st pay period following the expiration of the PIC.
Will the PIC remain in my record?
Yes. The PIC will remain on file and may be considered in determining which level of PIC is appropriate if future performance or conduct concerns arise.
What if I don't agree with the PIC?
Staff who have successfully completed their orientation period may utilize the Dispute Resolution Process. This Dispute Resolution form MUST be filed with Employee Relations within 10 calendar days of the date you received the PIC. Please refer to the Dispute Resolution Policy HR#-022 or the description of the dispute process on this website for more information.
If I don't sign the PIC when my supervisor gives it to me, is it valid?
Yes. Your signature serves as acknowledgement that you have received the information. If you refuse to sign, a witness will sign that you received the information
