Holiday Pay
Vanderbilt recognizes the following specific holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
Criteria to be eligible for Holiday Pay:
- Regular and term staff are immediately eligible for holidays as they occur
- Must be on active paid status
- Must work scheduled hours the entire week of the holiday. Calling out any time during the week of a holiday will negate eligibility for the holiday time.
- Staff members on approved vacation or medical leave (FMLA) in paid status, are eligible for holiday time
- If a work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday and the holiday is on Monday, the staff member may take alternate paid time off that is suitable to the staff member and the department.
Working on holidays:
Supervisors determine work schedules based on the operating requirements of their units. Staff must obtain authorization from their supervisor before working on a holiday recognized by the University.
Staff may be required to work on a holiday due to the operational needs of the unit. When this occurs, the staff member is granted another day off as holiday time within the next 90 days. If the department cannot provide holiday time off within 90 days for non-exempt staff, they will be paid for that holiday.
If hourly-paid staff works on the actual day of the holiday (i.e. July 4th) and not the day that Vanderbilt elects to observe the holiday, they are eligible to receive holiday differential pay. This pay is in addition to base pay, and in addition to any applicable shift differential. Each holiday covers the 24-hour period that begins at 12:00 midnight on the actual holiday, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on the same day. Holiday differential pay only applies to the hours worked during the 24-hour period. Only the holidays listed above will be eligible for differential pay.
