  • Library Resources for Leaders and Employees

The Vanderbilt University Libraries provide a treasure of books and other resources for leaders and staff members. Two particularly useful resources are e-books and article databases. Library resources are available to all faculty and staff, and some require a VUnetID log-in.

    E-Books

Accessing e-books via the Vanderbilt University Libraries:

    1. Go to Acorn (the University catalog) to search for a book by title, author or subject.

    2. If the library record comes up as an electronic resource, click on the Details button to the left of the title.

    3. Click on the link that says “An electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click for information.” This will pop up a NetLibrary window.

    4. Click on View this eBook to access the book.

    5. NetLibrary allows you to read the book from a PDF file. The table of contents is listed to the left.

    6. To navigate through the book, you can either use the table of contents or the next/previous buttons at the top of the page. These buttons will take you through the book one page at a time.

    7. E-books through NetLibrary are not available for printing or downloading to your computer.

We recommend the following e-books (requires VUnetID off campus):

The Buzz: 50 Little Things that Make a Big Difference to Delivering World-Class Customer Service David Freemantle
Customer Love: Attracting and Keeping Customers for Life Chip R. Bell
Managing Workplace Negativity Gary S. Topchik
Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes Are High Kerry Patterson
Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen
The Balanced Scorecard: Translating Strategy into Action Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton

    Database Resources

Accessing databases via the Vanderbilt University Libraries

From the Vanderbilt Libraries: Get help with research

We recommend the following database, among others:

    Business Source Premier

Search for the full text of articles in numerous journals and magazines including the Harvard Business Review, T+D, Time and Newsweek.

Searching for an article in the Harvard Business Review:

    1. Go to the Vanderbilt University Libraries home page.

    2. Click on Find Articles & Databases.

    3. Under “Need a database to find an article?” type in Business Source Premier and search for the database by name.

    4. Click on the link for Business Source Premier. Notice that it is listed as a Full Text Resource.

    5. Enter your search terms in the search boxes. Selecting a field can help narrow down your search. Using the AND, OR and NOT options can also narrow your search.

    6. If you only want the full text of articles and not just records, check the Full Text box.

    7. To narrow your search to a specific journal/magazine, click on More Options and enter the journal/magazine name (e.g. Harvard Business Review) in the Publication box.

    8. Click search to see the results.

    9. You can find more articles by clicking on the Subject terms to the left of the article results.

    10. For more suggestions on your search or more instructions for using the database, read the Help File.
