This highly interactive session of open dialogue and thought-provoking activities will expand our understanding of valuing differences among people and creating inclusive cultures that work. Becoming a LeaderFacilitator: Tammy Key , Organizational Effectiveness Team Fee: $60 Time: 8am-12noon Making the transition from being an individual contributor to a leadership position can be intimidating as well as exciting. This course describes some of the challenges that new leaders face and suggests some strategies for meeting those challenges. It also summarizes the additional skills and knowledge that leaders must acquire to fill their new role, and presents alternatives for acquiring them. Participants are given the opportunity to discuss their concerns and learn how to deal with being promoted to lead one's former peers. Who Should Attend: Anyone who has recently been promoted to a leadership position, anyone whose career goals include being promoted to leadership within the next 6 months and for leaders who have (or will have in the near future) new, first-line leaders working for them.

This often results in anxiety and frustration as well as damaged relationships. In this workshop, participants will explore what makes some conversations difficult and hard to handle. By engaging effectively in difficult conversations, participants can acheive stronger relationships, develop more self-confidence, and become less anxious. There will be opportunity to practice, to look at relevant situations, and to work on a personally difficult situation. Dealing with Difficult BehaviorsFacilitator: Marla Ballou, Organizational Effectiveness Team Fee: $60 Time: 8am-12noon This workshop, formerly known as "Dealing with Difficult People," is designed to help staff at all levels deal with the everyday difficulties of working with others. Participants will learn to identify, understand and cope with difficult behaviors using six basic coping steps and will have an opportunity to create a personal coping plan. While some of the tips will apply to customers, this workshop is focused more on dealing with difficult behaviors in colleagues. Any staff member who would like to learn how to effectively deal with the challenging behaviors they face in the workplace is welcome to register. Leading Teams Through ConflictFacilitator: Tammy Key, Organizational Effectiveness Team Fee: $60 Time: 8am-12noon Description and Objective: As a leader, you may find yourself in situations where you need to manage a conflict among the people who report to you. This course, previously "Managing Conflict for Leaders," will help you build and implement a strategy for helping others work through their conflict. It provides guidelines to help you determine how involved you need to be - when to lead the resolution, and when (and how) to simply coach and empower your people to resolve the conflict on their own. You will also learn a simple process for mediating disputes between the people on your team, when you find it necessary. Nuts and Bolts of Payroll and RecordsFacilitator: Various Fee: $10 Time: 8am-11:30am Description and Objective: The Nuts and Bolts workshop has long been an invaluable tool for those who perform administrative processes at Vanderbilt. The current format is more flexible for your convenience, and the content is continually being updated. The purpose is the same – to provide the necessary tools and resources to successfully maneuver through Vanderbilt’s administrative processes. Participants will enhance their skills in payroll and records functions. Topics include payroll dates and cycles; HR forms such as PAFs and PMFs; and processes for common scenarios such as new hires, terminations, pay rate changes, and transfers. This series is designed to support leaders to understand and facilitate partnerships within the team to enhance the team services. Tools and resources are provided to assist you in building trust, addressing conflict, clarifying commitments and holding team members accountable to reach team results. Vanderbilt Medical Center, Department Nursing Eduation and Development is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Tennessee Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

PeopleSoft OverviewFacilitator: HR Management Systems Fee: No charge Time: Various Description and Objective: The PeopleSoft Training Class provides all employees who use PeopleSoft with the opportunity to learn how to better navigate within Peoplesoft 8.8 and view various components of information including but not limited to: Job Data, Personal Data, Position Management, Leave Accrual Information and Pay Data. This class also incorporates Introduction to Reporting, which covers how to run an existing query in PeopleSoft 8.8 to HTML and to Excel. Targeted Selection - Module 2Building Your Human Resource Leadership Foundation Facilitator: Various Fee: $250 Time: 2 days, 8am-5pm Description and Objective: Targeted Selection is Vanderbilt’s approach for consistency when hiring managers are interviewing and selecting new employees. This training will develop a variety of key behavioral interviewing skills and sharpen existing skills to improve selection decisions. The skills and techniques learned during this workshop are immediately applicable on the job. Upon completion of the two day training session, you will receive certification as a Targeted Selection interviewer. You will also have access to the competency based interview guides for the various job families within Vanderbilt. VUMC New Leader OrientationFacilitators: Pam Brown, Organizational Effectiveness Team and Betsy Bond, Learning Center at VUMC Fee: No Charge Time: 2 days, 8am-5pm Description and Objective: VUMC is engaged in the process of becoming one of the best academic medical centers in the world. This is no small ambition. Leaders play a crucial role in making this happen. This two-day orientation will introduce you to Elevate, the name we have attached to this ambition to be one of the best and the journey we must take to get there. In addition to equipping you with knowledge about Elevate, this session will provide basic information regarding VU policies and procedures and assist you in designing a process to continue your professional development. Leaders are expected to attend the next orientation that is offered, not to exceed a two-month period after they have been hired. Who Should Attend: All new leaders beginning with Assistant Managers will attend. This includes leaders who have responsibility for administration of HR procedures and policies such as recruitment, performance appraisals, PIC, supervision of employees; those who administer budgets; those who have been selected to attend future Leadership Development Institute (LDI) sessions and are responsible for assignments on Linkage Grids.
