Marriage

You and your spouse will want to evaluate your benefit options to be sure your coverage makes sense for both of you and for any children that might be in your new family. Marriage is considered a qualifying life event, which allows you to declare a Family Status Change and make changes to your benefits during the plan year. Changes must be made within 30 days after the marriage and  consistent with and as a result of the marriage.

Action Items Checklist:
Change name (if applicable) and marital status.
  Update your name in Oracle by logging in and selecting Personal Information and then edit. Select Biographical Info then edit your name and martial status.
   

Change tax withholding status (if applicable).

  Update your tax withholding in Oracle by logging in and selecting Pay from the menu tiles. Select the Tax Withholding tile then edit. Be sure to save your changes before exiting.
   
Make changes to benefits (if applicable).

Health and/or Dental Coverage

Changes must be made within 30 days of the marriage.

  • If you wish to add your spouse and newly eligible children to your coverage; or drop your coverage if your spouse is going to cover you under his or her plan, you must declare a Life Change within 30 days of the status change. See Family Status Change for more information.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

Changes must be made within 30 days of the marriage.

  • If you anticipate changes to your health care or dependent care expenses in the upcoming months due to your change in marital status, you may want to begin participating in a FSA, or increase or decrease the contributions to your existing FSA.

Retirement Benefits

Changes should be made as soon as possible after the marriage.

  • Contact your investment company to update your beneficiary designation.

Life Insurance

Changes can be made anytime during the year.

    • You may want to change your beneficiary designation. Requests to change your coverage level are allowed anytime during the year.  See Changing Life Insurance for details on how to apply.
