HSA Overview
The Health Savings Account (HSA) is a personal savings account which you can use to save money by contributing pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified health care expenses, such as deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance. “Pre-tax” means you do not pay federal income or FICA taxes on the amount of money you put in the HSA. When you have medical expenses, you can choose to pay for them using your HSA, or you can save the money for a future need, even into retirement.
How to enroll, activate and make changes
You can enroll in the HSA during open enrollment, or at any time during the year up to December 1. When enrolling in the HSA, you must agree to the HSA Eligibility Question in My VU Benefits and then agree to the terms and conditions and activate your account with Fidelity in order to have your contributions and Vanderbilt’s seed money deposited.
