Traveling with Vanderbilt Health Care

Vanderbilt provides health care coverage to benefits-eligible participants and their dependents while traveling outside the network area, whether in the United States or in a foreign country. Please see your insurance provider's section below for more information.

International Travel

  • Aetna
    • All Aetna plans require that you pay the provider and then submit a claim form to Aetna.
    • Foreign emergency/urgent care claims are paid at  Aetna's in-network level of coverage
    • Download an Aetna claim form
  • Capital Rx (pharmacy coverage)
    • If you are traveling outside the United States, your claims are paid at the out-of-network level and you will need to file a claim with Capital Rx.
    • If you are planning an extended trip, and need more than a 90-day supply of a maintenance drug, contact People Experience to provide your itinerary and the reason for the prescription.

  • New York Life Secure Travel

    If you are enrolled in Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance, you are automatically eligible for New York Life Secure Travel, which provides access to assistance when faced with an emergency while traveling internationally or domestically when more than 100 miles away from home.

    New York Life Secure Travel offers emergency travel assistance, emergency medical transportation and pre-trip planning information and resources including:

    • Emergency evacuation and repatriation, when medically necessary
    • Travel arrangements for the return of a travel companion or children under age 18 who are left unattended due to the covered person’s medical emergency
    • Round-trip transportation as well as accommodation, for a family member or friend to visit a covered person who is hospitalized
    • Arrange and cover the costs associated with returning a deceased covered person’s remains to his or her place of residence for burial
    • Referrals to physicians, dentists, medical facilities, and legal assistance providers
    • Arrangements for payment of medical expenses up to $10,000 if required prior to treatment
    • Assistance with lost or stolen items including luggage and prescription replacement services
    • Emergency cash advances up to $1,500
    • Immunization requirements
